A selection of walks that can be done from and around the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, giving many good vantage points from which to view the passing trains.
For
a short walk from Haworth to Oxenhope, get off the train at Haworth Station
and cross the footbridge. Walk up the cobbled street towards the village,
or meander in the same direction through the pretty park. At the top,
cross the road and walk up a steep hill into the village.
Once in the
village, follow the signs for the Bronte Parsonage Museum which is located
next to the churchyard. This walk can be combined with a visit to both
the church and the museum. Proceed through the churchyard to a kissing
gate and follow the path past a car park. The path then proceeds between
two walls until it emerges in a field. Turn sharp left, following the
edge of the field. At a 4-way sign post, follow the route for the "Bronte
Way" until you emerge on the main road. Turn right along the road,
then left down a side road, continuing until you reach Oxenhope Station
when you can board the train for a return trip to Keighley. Using map
OL21, start at grid reference SE030372, finish at SE032354.
Also, see our walk between Oakworth and Oxenhope station, which incorporates the following section from Haworth.
Start at grid reference 035372, Haworth Station. Exit the
station, turn right and proceed along the road. Don't walk across the
bridge, but instead bear left round a corner. Almost immediately, there
is a gap in the wall, where you will see a public footpath sign. You are
now on part of the "Worth Way" which forms a loop around the
railway line, beginning and ending at Keighley. The path follows the route
of a stream, and you will see a wind turbine at the top of the hill to
your left. Continue following the signs for "Worth Way" and
"Oxenhope Station" or you may possibly see signs for "Millenium
Way' as this path has been incorporated into a much longer walk, which
isn't shown on older maps. Continue past the sewage works, cross a footbridge
and proceed to Oxenhope Station. There are many criss-crossing paths in
this area, but you will be on the right track if you keep the railway
on your right as you walk along. Finish at SE032354.
A long version of the above can be commenced from Oxenhope, SE032354.
Follow the reverse of route 2 until you come out through the gap in the
wall at Haworth, SE035369 and follow the road back round the corner. This
time though, DO walk across the bridge which crosses the railway, then
almost immediately bear sharp right up a side street.
Proceed in a generally straight line for about 500m, until you come to
another road SE034375. Bearing
right, continue along this road, past a chimney, turning right down a
track before you reach a mill. Continue along the track, crossing a minor
road, through a farm, keeping going until to emerge onto another road.
Turn downhill and proceed along the road until you reach a side road on
your right which leads down to Damems station, SE051388.
You can either
finish here by catching the next train, or proceed through the level crossing
and bearing immediately left alongside part of the the old dismantled
railway which ran from Keighley, via Cullingworth to Bradford. Continue
along the path until it emerges onto the main road, then walk along the
roadside for about 200m until you reach Ingrow station. If you've time,
do have a look round the Museum of Rail Travel with its many historical
items before either boarding the train back to Keighley, or to complete
the walk, return to the road and continue for a further 200m, turn right
at the crossroads, and after about 150m pick up the footpath to your left
and continue alongside the railway to Keighley station. SE065414. This
walk is between 7-8km long.
