Kashmir, Bradford, West Yorkshire

Kashmir, BradfordWe first heard about The Kashmir restaurant when we asked the manager of our local Aagrah where he liked to go for a curry.  "Kashmir," he said, going on to describe the food as "really authentic."

We happened to mention we were thinking of going to some friends, whose immediate and enthusiastic response was "Ooh, Kashmir, can we come too?"

With two such glowing recommendations, we just had to give it a try.

Reputed to be one of the oldest curry restaurants to set up in Bradford, The Kashmir has retained a cheap'n'cheerful 'curry cafe' along the lines of the originals set up to cater for the Asian workers in the textile industry.

Kashmir's basement curry cafeThe street-level restaurant only opens in the evenings, but the real highlight is round the back and down a tiled staircase.

At the bottom, is the simple basement cafe area with its unadorned wooden tables and extremely comfy chairs.

There are a few chipped and missing tiles, and the walls could probably do with a repaint, but we're not here to admire the decor; we're here to taste the food.

Menus, glasses and jugs of water are brought almost before we can sit down, and are soon followed by bowls of minty dip and plates of sliced onion, cucumber and tomato.

We ordered enthusiastically from the starter menu, sampling the shami, seekh and reshami kebabs and a vegetable samosa, accompanied by a jug of traditional mango lassi.

Chicken makhaniBetween the six of us, we tried main dishes of chicken tikka with chips, a meat vindaloo served with a huge plate of boiled rice, chicken makhani (pictured) and a chicken masala, served with side plates piled high with chappatis.

I think we must've overdone the starters, as we couldn't manage to finish our very generous mains, but in the interests of research, we all had a dessert.

The traditional mango ice-cream was delicious, as were the two nutty options - coconut or pistachio. Sally and Heidi opted for the novelty vanilla ice-creams, as Sally wanted the funky cow container to add to her collection of cows.  A steal at 1.70.

Verdict: Kashmir serves great food, and is exceptionally good value.  Eight starters, six main courses and six desserts, plus one jug of lassi, came to a grand total of 44.

I don't think you'll find many places that are better value.
